For the United States, its vast economy provides resilience against the shocks of conflict. For Iran, with little left to lose, the battle is existential. But for the rest of the world, the stakes are immense—economies, livelihoods, and futures hang in the balance.

In India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appealed to citizens to exercise caution in spending, particularly on goods that deepen import dependency. The intent is clear: to ease pressure on foreign exchange reserves. Yet, the reality is sobering. Those with the means to travel abroad, purchase gold, or buy luxury cars remain largely unaffected by such appeals, continuing their consumption patterns without pause.

The challenges are compounded by India’s fragile public transport system. Outside Delhi NCR, metros remain unreliable, overcrowded, and poorly connected. In Mumbai, commuting across the city demands multiple changes and modes of transport, draining both time and energy. For the common citizen, the appeal to cut back feels hollow when basic infrastructure itself is inadequate.

Gold prices, already soaring, are driven by purchases from the affluent or by families compelled by tradition during marriages and ceremonies. Meanwhile, among Modi’s appeals, the call for work-from-home (WFH) has found the most resonance. Post-Covid, corporates struggled to bring employees back to offices, and now face renewed pressure to adapt. Yet, only 8–9% of India’s workforce can realistically shift to WFH, primarily in IT and services. Factories, where workers live close to their jobs, remain unaffected. What is needed is not appeals but clear government communication on which sectors can embrace remote work.

Similarly, the suggestion for schools to return to online classes risks repeating the mistakes of the pandemic. Education is not just about textbooks—it is about community, collaboration, and character-building. Technology can connect us, but it cannot replace the trust, bonding, and shared human experience that physical presence nurtures. Parliament itself is proof: governance cannot be reduced to a virtual transaction.

The deeper truth is this: appeals alone cannot drive change. Leaders must lead by example. When ministers and party leaders continue to travel in convoys of cars and helicopters, the credibility of the Prime Minister’s words erodes. Citizens look to their leaders not just for speeches, but for action.

Technology has empowered human beings to stay connected remotely, but trust, bonding, and collaboration are built while working under the same roof. Otherwise, work risks becoming transactional. We must find balance between technological convenience and human behaviour. As humans, we need a face to discuss, transact, laugh, or do business. Certain things are simply not possible online—just as Parliament must function in person to truly serve the people.

India stands at a defining moment. The world is in turmoil, and the nation must find strength in resilience, discipline, and unity. But resilience cannot be built on words alone—it must be lived, demonstrated, and embodied by those at the helm. It’s great that PM Modi spoke to the people in very transparent manner to make them aware of the challenges ahead for the country but if leaders fail to walk the path they ask others to tread, then the Prime Minister’s appeal will not just fall short—it will vanish into the void.

India has leadership that matches words with deeds. It will be interesting to see how PM Modi own minister and party leaders follow the path led by PM Modi.

The Iran–US war has left the world standing at a perilous crossroads, searching for a way out of a crisis not of its own making.
